For every campout, a Grub Master is assigned for each patrol. They are responsible for purchasing & bringing food for their entire patrol!
Check with your patrol leader if you are unsure who the assigned Grub Master is for an upcoming campout.
DO NOT store any food or sweets in your tent. It attracts wild animals such as bears and racoons. Ants and other insects can also invade your tent, even if stored in sealed packaging!
1) Planning the meals (done as a Patrol)
As a patrol, make an detailed list of what & how much is food is need for each meal
This plan must be written down and shared with the Scout Master and/or Assistant Scout Master for approval prior to finalizing
Number of scouts - confirm who is attending to estimate food quantities
Food Budget - $20 per scout for each outing
Numbers of meals - usually plan for a Saturday Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner & a Sunday quick Breakfast, but this may vary based on the outing
Check for any dietary restrictions or food allergies
Supplemental items - don't forget things like aluminum foil, butter, oil, salt & pepper, seasonings, etc. (as required by the meal plan)
Ice - plan to purchase a large bag as perishable food items need to be kept cold for the duration of the weekend
Cooler - on the Monday troop meeting proceeding each campout, the Grub Master will be provided with a cooler from the troop. Make arrangements with the quartermaster to get a cooler if you are unable to make the meeting that night.
2) Purchasing the food (done by Grub Master)
Parents will need to drive their scout to the store (the week of the upcoming camp out)
Purchase the items per the agreed upon patrol meal plan
Store the food in your fridge or freezer at home until the day of the camp out
Reach out to your patrol leader if you have any questions or need to make an adjustment
3) Bring the Food (done by Grub Master)
Before leaving home to come to the camp out meeting spot, pack the cooler with food and ice (DO NOT pre-pack the cooler that morning or the night before...you run the risk of running out of ice & compromising safe food storage temperature)
Make sure the food is completely covered with ice
Bring dry good food items and supplies in separate grocery bags
4) Empty, Dry, and Clean out cooler (done by Grub Master)
After the camp out, the Grub Master will need to take the cooler home
There are usually left over items the Grub Master can keep or dispose of as needed
Empty the remaining ice and dry out the cooler
Return the empty, clean, and dry cooler to the next Troop meeting
